Review

The 9 episodes in this mini series are broken down into three sections, each with three verses (attitude, mindset, effort). We are on the second of three bible verses specifically addressing attitude:

  • EP 78: Philippians 2:14 (attitude) “Do everything without complaining and arguing.”
  • EP 79: Romans 12:12 (attitude) “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”
  • EP 80: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (attitude) featured next week

Verse

Last week, we discussed Philippians 2:14, remember it? Try it now. “Do everything without complaining and arguing.” Yep! If you missed last week’s ridiculously childish way to remember that verse, head back to episode 78, and then come here. Now’s a great time to shout out the free workbook that goes along with the mini series to deepen the memorization techniques. If you want that for free, head to brookecollier.com and enter your email when prompted. The freebie will arrive to your inbox on Monday while this mini series releases weekly.

Here we are, with this week’s verse Romans 12:12. We’re going to memorize Romans 12:12 in about 12 minutes. I’ll read from the NLT, so you can follow along in your bible, workbook, or YouVersion bible app.

“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”

Romans 12:12

Verse Context Breakdown

Let’s get some biblical context around this bible verse. Here are some quick facts to help with the verse breakdown

  • Paul, the same guy who penned last week’s verse, it back at it
  • Paul wrote this letter to the…you guessed it…the Romans
  • He wrote this from Corinth (which you may have 1 and 2nCorinthians, we’ll see those again later in this mini series)
  • This is the same book you can walk through the “Roman Road” check out episode 27 for a deeper dive)
  • Romans 12 is titled “A Living Sacrifice to God”, and it walks through how we can live out our faith

I highly recommend you read Romans 12 at some point this week, so you can gain a deeper understanding and connection to the context around our bible verse Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”

In this verse, Paul is giving the Romans three things to focus on:

  • 1) Rejoice in our confident hope
  • 2) Be patient in trouble
  • 3) Keep on praying

I know when my attitude is bad, I can lack confidence, be impatient, and prayer happens to be the last thing on my mind. As an enneagram 1 and recovered perfectionist, attitude that manifested out of me most was anger and frustration. A different festering emotion may come more naturally to you.

Whatever you’re feeling when your attitude is out of whack, we need to take advice from the scripture and rejoice in our confident hope, which is Jesus. We need to be patient in trouble, whatever that trouble is, especially attitude. Finally we can get our attitude in check by turning it from self focused to savior focused and pray. More on this in a couple minutes. Now, let’s talk about how to memorize Romans 12:12 in about 12 minutes. “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”

Memorize Romans 12:12

At this point in the episode, you’ve heard Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.” a few times now. Yay for you! When our attitude is below standard, we can remember the three things this bible verse tells us to do. I’ll say them again:

  • 1) Rejoice in our confident hope
  • 2) Be patient in trouble
  • 3) Keep on praying

We get three directives in 13 words. A baker’s dozen of words if you will. I have a not completely random question for you. Do you like donuts or do your kids like to eat them? Donuts isn’t usually my first choice for breakfast out on the town. But, if we happen to swing by the donut store I do enjoy the chocolate sprinkled donut holes.

The kind of sprinkles that are the little bitty spherical circles, not the gross chalky cylindrical ones. You know what I’m talking about. Those are two completely different sprinkle tastes. Get that trash out of here. And, my apologizes to those who like the chalky sprinkles. You’re entitled to your wrong opinion.

Back to the baker’s dozen and the number 12. Here I am eating the chocolate donut holes with the good kind of sprinkles, and just when I think I’ve eaten the 12 that I ordered, there’s an extra one tossed into the bag! A baker’s dozen of 13 donut holes! That’ll perk my attitude right up. A little free treat, no matter what it is, is a fun little attitude boost.

Now you can tie that baker’s dozen mentality into your Romans 12:12. You think you’re getting 12 words for an attitude check from Romans 12:12, but you’re getting a baker’s dozen of 13! Romans 12:12 (dozen, dozen), and the verse carries a baker’s dozen amount of words to boost your attiude. Now, you can remember to find an attitude boost in Romans 12:12

Strategy Technique

Now, to memorize the verse. We’re looking to lift our spirits, and boost our attitude with this verse. So, naturally, let’s talk about rocket ships. Whether you’re an astrophysicist, NASA team member, or you’ve seen Apollo 13 or Armageddon or Little Einsteins, we all know that there is a countdown before liftoff. So, when your attitude is bad, and you need a pick me up, let’s think rocket ships and counting down to our attitude lift off.

Quick! Where can we find that verse again for an attitude rocket ship kind of boost? Think about donuts if you want a reminder. Yes, Romans 12:12, and we’re looking to find a baker’s dozen of words (13) that fit into 3 directives or tasks. If you want the attitude reset boost in 3, 2, 1, liftoff, then you’ve got to do the 1, 2, 3 first.

  • Rejoice in our confident hope
  • Be patient in trouble
  • Keep on praying

Our countdown to liftoff goes 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 liftoff. In the first task of “rejoice in our confident hope” there are 5 words. That’s your number 5 in the countdown. The second piece of advice is “be patient in trouble”. That’s 4 words in your countdown. The third directive is “keep on praying”. You guessed it. That’s three words.

“But Brooke, the verse reads ‘AND keep on praying’. And that’s technically 4 words in the countdown.” You’re right, but for the sake of the rocket ship 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown and your brain’s sake, we’re remembering that there is an “and” before the last task ( I hear your grammar queens out there with your lists and commas!). Here’s the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 we’re working with:

  • 5) Rejoice in our confident hope
  • 4) Be patient in trouble
  • 3) Keep on praying
  • 2) Romans (two syllables)
  • 1) 12:12 (because you get the baker’s dozen of 1 extra)
  • Liftoff

Additional Support

Here’s how you can do the rocket ship countdown to boost your attitude. Let’s also tie in some additional support to remember our starting letters to these three tasks. I’m going to say the verse again for our brains. “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.” Romans 12:12:

  • R: Rocket ship: rejoice in our confident hope
  • B: Boost: Be patient in trouble
  • K: Keep: Keep on praying

The rejoicing rocket ship will boost our attitude and keep us up.

  • 5) Rejoice in our confident hope
  • 4) Be patient in trouble
  • 3) Keep on praying
  • 2) Romans (two syllables)
  • 1) 12:12 (because you get the baker’s dozen of 1 extra)
  • Liftoff

Like all memory verses, practice is key. Also I have a weird brain, and who knew you’d be learning Romans 12:12 by talking about donuts and rocket ships?! Remember, the workbook is your friend. Use the workbook, and donuts, and rocket ships. With practice, it will stick in your brain. God is team scripture memorization, so pray and ask for his help with this.

Live It Out

We’ve talked about Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.” We’ve discussed how donuts help us remember the 12:12 and 13 words, and we’ve talked about rocket ships boosting our attitude and keeping us up. You’ve learned how to memorize Romans 12:12 in about 12 minutes. Now how do we live this out in the real world?

While rocket ships will likely be encountered less than donuts in our lives, we know that when we focus our attitude on Christ, our spirits are lifted. Just like with a standard cool down method of counting down to calm oneself, we can use this 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown.

Stressed about getting your kids to and from performance course at odd hours while working? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Overwhelmed at the growing to-do list because of all the fun summer things you’re trying to do? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Short-tempered because you’ve broken up 18 sibling fights and it’s only 9am? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

  • 5) Rejoice in our confident hope
  • 4) Be patient in trouble
  • 3) Keep on praying
  • 2) Romans (two syllables)
  • 1) 12:12 (because you get the baker’s dozen of 1 extra)
  • Liftoff

I am so thankful that when I’ve caught a case of bad attitude, I can rejoice in Jesus. He’s the reason I get to spend eternity in Heaven. Because I am confident in this, I know I can lean on him for patience in times of trouble (or anger, or sadness, etc). I ask for this through prayer. Therefore, I can rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in times of trouble, and keep on praying. You can too.

Podcast Recap

Take a minute and reflect on the verse that helps us boost our attitude. Try to say it to yourself. Hold it in your brain. Got it? Let’s say it together.

“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”

Romans 12:12

We used a few tactics, like the baker’s dozen of donuts and 12, 12, 13. R: rocket ship: rejoice. B: boost: be patient. K: keep: keep on praying. You’ve got the free workbook, and you can use the printable cut outs for your book, your car, your mirror. Know that all brains work differently, so utilize all the resources provided for you. Episode 24 is also full of several strategies for memorizing scripture.

The most important thing you can do is pray! Ask God to help you remember these 9 verses we’re covering. Start with episode 78 and grow from there. Just like part of Romans 12:12 says…keep on praying. God hears you, he sees your effort with this, and he loves you.
