2 Corinthians 10:5
Verse Context Breakdown
How’s that for a mindset verse? Anything that is getting in the way from following God is to be captured and taught to obey Christ. Let’s get some important context around this verse, and then look through the lens of mindset. Here are some quick facts before we memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5:
- Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians (episode 5)
- It reassures them of his love and commitment
- 2 Corinthians is broken down into three sections, and the chapter in particular we’re in is an invitation and challenge to humble repentance
- There were people who needed to turn away from rebellion
This is heavy. There are people in this scenario who are rejecting the truth, and Paul is calling them to turn to God. Sounds a lot like today too, huh? That is more macro level, and today, I want to challenge us to think on the micro level. Paul was challenging groups of people, and I want you to challenge the thoughts in your head. More on this in the Live It Out section. We’ll look at how this verse in particular will help us combat toxic thoughts.
Memorize Verse
Onto how to memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5. Let’s read the verse again so it’s fresh on our minds: “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” Three things are happening here:
- 1) We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God.
- 2) We capture their rebellious thoughts and
- 3) Teach them to obey Christ
As Christians, we should want everyone to know, love, and follow God. Satan is working hard at getting in the way of that, and he is the proud obstacle. He’s going to do everything he can to get in the way of people receiving Christ. God is calling us to destroy these proud obstacles, and that starts with capturing rebellious thoughts.
Once we recognize the rebellious thought, we can capture it, and teach that thought to follow the truth of the Bible. When we repeatedly do this, the proud obstacles satan is scheming stand no chance. “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
Strategy Technique
Let’s strategy talk for how to memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5. We’re using the link technique, which means we’re going to link the parts of the verse together to accomplish the big picture. This one may take some extra practice if you’re not used to the link technique. Remember to use your workbook for repetition and assistance.
For the link technique, I’ll give you the link, followed by a question. The answer to the question is the next link. Hint: think logically through the questions and answers. It’ll help you memorize the verse while deepening the meaning and significance of what the scripture is actually telling us. Here’s the verse again to keep it fresh: “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
- Link 1: We destroy every proud obstacle.
- Question 1: Why do we destroy every proud obstacle? Because…
- Link 2: That keeps people from knowing God.
- Question 2: How do we do that?
- Link 3: We capture their rebellious thoughts
- Question 3: Then what do we do?
- Link 4: and teach them to obey Christ.
“We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” Four links in the chain. I’ll say the whole verse again, then I’ll we’ll start the linking. Friendly reminder, you can spend the next few minutes hitting rewind 30 seconds so you can repeat practice.
Now to recall the verse reference 2 Corinthians 10:5. Think back to our context. Corinth had some people who were rebelling and needed to repent. We could say that they needed to die to their old ways and have a second chance at life following Christ . 2 Corinthians.
For the 10:5 part. Let’s math, shall we? 10 divided by 5 is 2, it all plays into each other. This is the part where I remind you that memorizing scripture is good for your soul, and worth every second of practice. Use your workbook, use this link technique, and use episode 24. If you can memorize the FRIENDS theme song from repetition, you can certainly memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5, “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” You can do this!
Live It Out
Hooray! Now that you can memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5, it’s time to live this verse out through our mindset lens. Let’s say the verse together for funsies, and then let’s chat. “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
Something that changed my life forever was when I realized the God-given power I have to capture every single thought and hold it up to the bible. If the bible contradicted that thought, I know it’s a lie and I can toss it away. I feel like satan is just trying to throw spaghetti noodle toxic thoughts at our minds to see if something sticks. Not today, satan.
The more I read my Bible, prayed, spent time in Christian community, and told others about Jesus, the more I could recognize the toxic thoughts trying to get a foothold in my mind. An easy way to remember this: you don’t have to believe every thought you think.
My Example
I was going through a rough patch a few years ago, and I felt like my mind was a battlefield with a particular struggle. I felt like all I was doing was spending my days actively capturing thoughts because my mindset was so out of control. This went on for a long time because I had unknowingly wired my brain to go down certain paths when triggers happened. 0/10 recommend letting your thoughts go unchecked.
Once I realized that satan had a foothold, I knew it needed to stop. I kept reading the bible, prayed all the live long day, stayed consistent with meeting up with other Christians to keep each other accountable, and I kept sharing the good news of the gospel. Recited truths back to myself over and over. I consistently captured thoughts, and I can testify today that it absolutely works. It takes practice, time, patience, and grace.
I read up neuroscience, brain rewiring, and all the nerdy things because I knew the word of God is true, and I wanted to know what my brain was scientifically going through. I recommend Switch On Your Brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf. She’s a Christian brain scientist, and she makes it her mission to prove that the bible is true through her research. She says if the science doesn’t match scripture, the science has not yet caught up to the truth of the bible. She’s pretty incredible. I’ll link her book.
Your Turn
Your mindset can be rewired. God transforms us by the renewing of our mind. If your thought life is going unchecked, I highly recommend you give capturing thoughts a try. The bible says you can do it! So this is your moment to begin! Here’s the step by step process of what I did to regularly capture my thoughts.
- 1) Filter & Sort: I run my thoughts through a biblical lens filter: Some thoughts are easy to sort through, while other need a little more digging.
- 2) Yellow Flags: Since I’ve already filtered through the green and red flags, I look at the yellow flags. These are thoughts that are questionable or I’m not quite sure what to think about it.
- 3) Do Your Research: This is when I start to look up scripture to see what the bible is saying about the thought in my head. There is almost always either and underlying or overarching theme to the yellow flag thoughts, and finding that helps me figure out where to search in the word.
Over time, and read, pray, talk tell, your mind can sort through thoughts faster and faster. Bonus: when you have scripture memorized, the process is easier. Good thing you’re here learning to memorize 2 Corinthians 10:5 today.
An example of a toxic thought pattern may be that you don’t feel like you’re a good enough mom. I know us moms tend to struggle that we’re never doing enough, and that we could always be doing more. Here’s how this could look when you feel like your mom skills aren’t up to par with what the world is screaming at you. Let’s look at the thought, “I’m a bad mom.”
- 1) Recognize: this is a thought or theme I’ve been thinking lately. I’ve been thinking that I’m not doing a good job as a mom as all these others out there.
- 2) Filter: Is this a thought from God? Would God be having me compare my story to someone else’s? I know I’m doing my best, so would God call me a bad mom for buying the cookies for the party instead of baking them (or insert other example: pinterest party crafty mom, fit mom, stay at home mom, etc…).
- 3) Research: I’m going to my bible for this one. Look, 1 Peter 4:10 says, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”
- 4) Capture and teach that thought to obey Christ: I can recognize that I’m not the crafty pinterest mom because God gave me the gift of being an excellent encourager. I’m going to keep encouraging my kids and supporting them with my words because that’s the skill God gave me. He also gave me the crafty mom friend, so if I ever need help with that, I’ll just call her. I’m confident in this because “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” I refuse to let this toxic thought get in the way of my spiritual gifts.
Know who you are in Christ. Learn the truths of the Bible. Be consistent with read, pray, talk, tell, and it comes more naturally with time. Just like muscle memory, it’s mindset memory. Train your brain to filter thoughts with a biblical, and it will change your life. Your mindset matters, and 2 Corinthians 10:5 packs a punch that puts satan in his place, not in your mind. He’s got no ground to stand on when we hold up the truth of the bible. Get your mind right by capturing your thoughts.
You are the daughter of the King. You’re chosen, forgiven, redeemed. You are loved, and you belong. You are bold, brave, and strong. You’re seen, you’re accepted. You are able, you’re protected. Through Him you can do anything because you’re the daughter of the King.
