Review

The 9 episodes in this mini series are broken down into three sections, each with three verses (attitude, mindset, effort). We are on the second of three bible verses specifically addressing attitude:

  • EP 78: Philippians 2:14 (attitude) “Do everything without complaining and arguing.”
  • EP 79: Romans 12:12 (attitude) “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”
  • EP 80: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (attitude) “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
  • EP 81: 2 Timothy 1:7 (mindset) “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
  • EP 82: 2 Corinthians 10:5 (mindset) “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
  • EP 83: Philippians 4:8 (mindset) “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
  • EP 84: 1 Corinthians 10:31 (effort) featured today

We’ve had the opportunity to memorize scripture that helps us keep our attitude in check. We’re called to do everything without whining. We know that we can rejoice in the hope of Jesus, choose joy, continuously pray, and be thankful in all of life’s circumstances.

After attitude, we’ve shifted the focus to mindset where we know we can tap into our God given spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. We have the ability to capture toxic thoughts, and gain clarity on what we should focus our minds on.

Now, here we are. We’ve gotten our headspace in check, so now we can go forth into our daily lives, and wholeheartedly do kingdom work. Let’s get after it! It’s time to memorize 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Verse

We’ve got a shortie this week. Before I read, let me shout out the free workbook that goes right along with the Anchored Attitude mini series. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31

A Story About My Dad

I love this verse! Every time I read this scripture, I think of my dad. When I was growing up, my dad and I would have conversations about my passions, interests, sports, academics, aspirations. Whether I was uncertain of the next step, or knew what I was doing he would always say the line, “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

This advice is rooted in 1 Corinthians 10:31! Any time my dad told me “Whatever you are, be a good one.” I knew that it carried the weight of whatever it is I’m doing whether that’s CEO or crossing guard, be the best you can be. Be a hard worker, improve on your passions, get a mentor. And it wasn’t be a good one for my earthly father’s sake, but for my heavenly one.

I am so so thankful that my dad engrained this into my mind. I carry it still today, and now we’re working on getting our kids to see this kind of drive with effort too.

Verse Context Breakdown

Now, for some context around 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

  • Paul wrote this letter to the church at Corinth (episode 5)
  • Paul spent about a year and a half with the Corinthians
  • 1 Corinthians is broken up into 5 parts, each part addresses an issue and responds with a gospel solution
  • This letter helps us learn how to think and problem solve like good Christ followers

I know a lot of problems would vanish if we began to respond with “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” More on that in the Live it Out section in a bit.

Memorize Verse

But, first. Let’s talk how to memorize 1 Corinthians 10:31. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” A little verse breakdown:

  • Part 1: So whether you eat
  • Part 2: or drink,
  • Part 3: or whatever you do,
  • Part 4: do it all for the glory of God.

We’re going to use the memorization visualization technique to memorize 1 Corinthians 10:31. We will memorize the verse by mapping it out visually. We’ll see an image in our minds, and each part of the verse will go in a different spot in the image in our brain.

Strategy Technique

Now, let’s talk baseball. Four parts in the verse, four bases for a home run. Whatever you are, be a good one. When you go to a baseball game, you know you’ve got to have some snacks! Maybe you’re a ballpark classic hot dog kind of gal, or maybe you’re the nacho queen with the deliciously fake cheese. Or, maybe you’re the old fashioned girl who likes peanuts and cracker jacks. First stop at the ballpark is snacks! 1st base: eat: “so whether you eat”.

First Base

Now, picture a baseball field of your choice. It can be the Rangers Stadium, the baseball field from the days you were a sideline sibling, or the baseball field from Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams. Just imagine it in your mind. You’re at bat, hit the metaphorical ball of life, and now it’s time to run the bases. 1st base time, grab those snacks!

  • 1st base: so whether you eat

Second Base

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” You know what goes great with ballpark hot dogs, nachos, and tasty treats? An ice cold beverage. Whatever you drink of choice is, do it for the glory of God. 2nd base: drink: “or drink”. Get that Angels in the Outfield ballpark back in your mind. You’ve rounded first base with your snacks, and onto second to get your beverage.

  • 1st base: so whether you eat
  • 2nd base: or drink

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Third Base

As we move onto 3rd base, I love how the scripture says, “or whatever you do”. You’re at the ballpark with your hotdog and coke, and when the 7th inning stretch music comes on, you’re belting out the lyrics to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” as you sway with the crowd. I believe that falls under the “or whatever you do” part of the verse. Visualize the baseball field with me again. You’ve got your food at first, drinks at second, and on your way to third to cover the “whatever else you’re doing in life” bit:

  • 1st base: so whether you eat, the nachos
  • 2nd base: or drink, the Dr. Pepper
  • 3rd base: or whatever you do, hollering “hey batter batter” and arm chair coaching

Home Plate

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” It’s time to bring it home. You’ve rounded all the bases, but what for? What’s our why? Do it all for the glory of God. Let’s visualize our baseball field once again, and like Bennie the Jet from The Sandlot, let’s bring it home:

  • 1st base: so whether you eat
  • 2nd base: or drink
  • 3rd base: or whatever you do
  • 4th base: do it all for the glory of God

1 Corinthians 10:31

And now to memorize 1 Corinthians 10:31 scripture reference. Baseball fact time, plus some math. We’ll take the 1 from 1 Corinthians, and subtract one from the 10 and 1 from the 31. 10-1=9, nine innings in a baseball game. 31-1-30, 30 MLB teams. Lookie there.

That, my friends, is how you memorize 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” My prayer for you, listener, is that every time you see a baseball field, you’re reminded of how everything we should do, should reflect God and bring Him glory. Which is such a lovely segue to the Live It Out section of the episode.

Live It Out

Let’s say the verse all together. Visualize the baseball field. You’re about to knock one out of the park with your fruit of the spirit, living out your faith skills. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Honest check in question. Is what you’re doing glorifying God? Yeah, we may have a good couple of pockets that are aligned with God, but is there something holding us back? Maybe it’s a secret sin. It could be someone’s sin against us, and we’re misguiding our emotions.

Is there something we’ve been meaning to work on, and we’re convicted, yet we haven’t given it to God? This is only a question we can answer for ourselves, and since the verse clearly states, “or whatever else you do”, maybe it’s time to dig a little deeper.

We All Fall Short

I get it, no one bats 1,000. I’ve messed up, mishandled emotions, and I’m not proud of my past in more than one way. Thank you, God, for saving me and giving me grace and mercy. Only Jesus is perfect, and his sacrifice is why I can stand here and testify that he redeemed my story, and he can do that for you too.

So, where does that leave us? If you’ve been washed by the blood of jesus, he has made you a new creation. you don’t have to walk in sin anymore. You can break free from that, and round those bases. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” He changed my eternity, the least I can do is glorify him with how I live my life.

Think back to all our other verses from the Anchored Attitude mini series. What we say and do can glorify God. What we think and how we capture our thoughts can point back to Christ. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Whatever you are, be a good one.
