Verse

Wow, we’re already at the end of our Anchored Attitude mini series! After these episodes, you’ll have 9 memory verses plus several strategies that help you with memorization. Today’s verse focuses on effort, and it’s Galatians 6:9. I’ll read it in the NLT:

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Galatians 6:9

Verse Context Breakdown

Goodness, don’t you love it when God promises that we’ll have blessing if we don’t give up. That means we should never give up! More on this in the Live It Out section. But first, let’s get some context around this scripture:

  • Paul wrote this letter to the Galatians (episode 5) and he wrote this letter with deep passion and frustration
  • This letter serves as a reminder that anyone can become a follower of Christ (culture shift for Jewish people)
  • Chapter 6 has a focus on Christians living by the spirit because we are a new creation when we cross the line of faith
  • This section of the Bible is titled “We Harvest What We Plant”, and that should be a big clue for us on how to live out our faith

Let’s talk plants for a second. When you plant a seed for an oak tree, you plant it, you water it, and then overnight the tree grows as tall as your house. Once the morning arrives, you take a step outside, look at the giant tree, and marvel at tree.

What?! No way! It takes time. If you’re a gardener or a farmer, you know this all too well. The Galatians we’re struggling in a lot of ways, and Paul gives this reminder: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Have you felt this way before? Maybe you’ve worked your butt off with hard work and dedication, and you still haven’t seen a payoff? That is rough. We’ll talk through this situation and more in the Live It Out section. First, let’s focus on this wonderful promise from God and memorize Galatians 6:9.

Memorize Galatians 6:9

Let’s say the verse again to keep it top of mind: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” We can break this verse down into chunks for better memorization.

  • Chunk 1: So let’s not get tired
  • Chunk 2: of doing what is good.
  • Chunk 3: At just the right time
  • Chunk 4: we will reap
  • Chunk 5: a harvest of blessing
  • Chunk 6: If we don’t give up

Strategy Technique

Let’s zoom out at the 6 chunks and make a couple of notes. It’s time to chunk the chunks for the ultimate chunking method! Let’s memorize Galatians 6:9 together.

First Big Chunk

The first three chunks have five words each. Hear them again:

  • Chunk 1: So let’s not get tired
  • Chunk 2: of doing what is good.
  • Chunk 3: At just the right time

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time…” As Christians, we need to keep on doing good this side of Heaven, even if it’s exhausting. “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” This first big chunk leaves us with hope, “At just the right time…” We know something good is coming, we just need to press on.

Second Big Chunk

Onto the second big chunk with memorize Galatians 6:9. Here are the fourth through sixth chunks:

  • Chunk 4: we will reap
  • Chunk 5: a harvest of blessing
  • Chunk 6: If we don’t give up

Remember the first big chunk had 5-5-5 for the amount of words. This second big chunk counts up 3-4-5 in word count. “We will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” That’s the best part! “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” If. We. Don’t. Give Up. More on that next.

Line By Line Memorization Technique

But first, we practice deeper with how to memorize Galatians 6:9. This is the part where you have the opportunity to hit rewind 30 seconds as much as you need. We’re going to take all six chunks, and do a line by line building memorization technique. This is similar to rote memory. We’ll say chunk one. The, chunk 1 and 2; then 1, 2, 3. Until we have it repeated all the way through. Ready? Let’s do this.

  • Chunk 1: So let’s not get tired
  • Chunk 2: of doing what is good.
  • Chunk 3: At just the right time
  • Chunk 4: we will reap
  • Chunk 5: a harvest of blessing
  • Chunk 6: If we don’t give up

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Verse Reference Galatians 6:9

Let’s memorize Galatians 6:9 verse reference. There were six chunks from our strategy, and 9 letters in the word “Galatians”: Galatians 6:9. Hooray! Now that you know how to memorize Galatians 6:9, let’s take a practical look at how we can live out our faith through this verse.

Live It Out

I’ll say our verse again, and I want you to think about what part of the scripture jumps out to you: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Man, I feel like several parts jump out to me, but here’s what’s so interesting.

This verse, we can just read through it, say, “Oh, well that’s some nice advice.” yet we can overlook the steps God is telling us here. Can you hear the action we should take? Let me say it again. “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Action on our part. Hope from God. More action on our part while holding onto the hope. It can be so exhausting doing the good, correct, or right thing. You know this all too well, busy Christian mom.

Scenario

It’s about 4:30pm, you’re trying to cook an awkwardly timed dinner before practices, get kids doing their chores, and you’re trying not to reach a boiling point because dag nabit you’ve tripped over the same dang pair of shoes three times since you’ve started cooking. You’re not tired from doing the good thing at all, are you?

In this scenario that I have certainly experienced (more than once), there are a couple of choices:

  • 1) blow up at your kids
  • 2) break down and cry/give up
  • 3) parent like our Heavenly Father would

Well, we know the right answer, but it is so hard to do. “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” If we can take a second, zoom out, and see the bigger picture, we can see the larger reason behind why option three is the best.

Eternal Mindset

Here’s the great news, God gave us this verse to encourage us. Every time we choose to parent like God, not only are we better for it, but our kids are too. They may very well be parenting your grandbabies one day, and I don’t want anyone screaming at my sweet grandkid like that. Eek!

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” I am so excited for the harvest that I know is promised to us. It may be something we see on this side of heaven like seeing our kids become amazing parents because it was modeled to them. Or maybe it’s something we personally won’t see, and the blessing is a few generations down the line.

It’s hard to think big, eternal picture when we’re caught up int he heat of the moment. If we can train ourselves to pause and quote Galatians 6:9, we’ll all be better people because of it. “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
